Fit and youth: a pair that gaps at the temple is an unrated pair

Fit is a safety spec

A pair of glasses is rated on a test head. On yours, the coverage that earned the rating depends on the lens sitting where the test head put it: against the cheek, under the brow, flat at the temple. A frame that gaps at the cheek lets a bounced BB under the lens. A frame that rides on splayed temples lifts off the nose and opens the brow to the lane beside you. A muff cup that presses a thick temple inward tilts the lens off the face and breaks the muff's seal while it does it. None of that shows up on a product page, and all of it is why this section exists.

The ear-muff test

Put the glasses on, then the muffs. Turn your head; press the cups in; wait ten minutes. If the lenses shift, if the temple digs, if you want to take the glasses off, the temple is too thick for the cup. The makers who solve it say so in writing — Oakley's Thin Stem, Magpul's temples "designed to eliminate pressure points while wearing over-the-ear hearing protection", ESS's telescoping temples with bend-to-fit ear tabs "for improved fit with headborne equipment" — and they are ranked on best shooting glasses for ear muffs. Face width

Most ballistic frames come in one size and call it universal. Universal is honest — designed to be tolerable on most heads — but it is not small and it is not large. Revision prints three sizes for the Sawfly, with dimensions; Wiley X sells the Gravity in Medium and Large; Pyramex says the Mini Ztek is for "slimmer facial sizes"; Magpul says the Defiant fits "medium to large faces". Those are the frames that answer a width problem, and the mirror tests that diagnose one, on shooting glasses for small faces and shooting glasses for large heads. Fog

Fog is the reason people take their glasses off, and a pair on the hat protects nothing. It is condensation — warm, wet air from your face meeting a cooler lens — and the fixes rank by physics: a dual-pane lens first, a named anti-fog coating second, venting and standoff third, habits last. The kids' section

A child in adult glasses has a gap at the cheek and a frame sliding down the nose, and will not push it back up. Youth sizes exist because the makers cut them smaller — Walker's "engineered specifically for smaller heads", Radians "specifically designed to fit smaller heads and faces" — and Z87.1 itself has an H mark for small-head frames. Most youth frames stop at Z87.1. That is adequate for a supervised rimfire line. It is not what the American Academy of Ophthalmology describes for BB and air guns: the AAO reports a 600% rise in hospital admissions for air-gun eye injuries since 2010, an average injured age that fell from 16 to 9, and says ballistic eyewear is the only protective eyewear designed for use with air guns. By rating first, then by the fit wording the maker actually prints — a size, a "smaller", a temple described for muffs — and never by how a frame looks in a photo.
