An OTG shield is the cheapest way to shoot with your prescription. The only spec that matters after the rating is the size of the frames it fits over — and only some makers print it.

When OTG is the right route
You shoot a few times a year, your prescription changes, or you will not buy a second pair of lenses: an OTG shield over your everyday glasses is the honest answer. The costs are real — bulk under ear muffs, a shield that sits away from the face, three lens surfaces to fog, and a rating that is typically Z87.1+ rather than the MIL-PRF tier — and they are the reason a regular shooter should read the prescription guide and consider an insert. For the occasional shooter and the parent who shoots twice a summer, OTG is right.
Measure your frames first
Width across the front of your glasses, temple to temple; height of the tallest lens. Then compare to the maker's limit. Pyramex prints one: "fits over frames up to 5 3/8 in W × 1 3/4 in H | 137 mm × 44 mm". NoCry prints three dimensions: "frames up to 5.7 in wide, 1.37 in tall (sides), 1.77 in tall (center)". Bollé's listing gives the shield's own frame width, 132 mm, which bounds what fits under it. Pyramex prints nothing for the Cappture Pro. A published limit is the difference between a shield that seals at the brow and one that perches on your street frames.

Three lens surfaces fog
Your glasses fog. Then the inside of the shield fogs. Then the outside. An OTG traps warm air between your frames and the shield, and the fix is the coating on the shield plus airflow: the Cappture Pro's H2MAX, the OTS's H2X SKU, Bollé's Platinum. The OverSpecs+ has anti-scratch only, which is why it is the wide-frame pick and not the humid-range pick. The fixes are ranked on how to stop shooting glasses fogging.

Plenty of sites say they shot every pair on the list. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the certification the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("meets", "certified", "tested to", "APEL"), check the lens system and the tints in the box, note whether the temples are described for ear muffs and whether an Rx route exists, and score every pick on a public rubric that weights protection first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite the retailer and say so. The standards themselves are explained on ANSI Z87.1 vs MIL-PRF-32432.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Can you wear safety glasses over prescription glasses for shooting?
Yes, with an over-the-glasses (OTG) shield sized for your frames. The Pyramex OTS publishes its limit: frames up to 137 mm × 44 mm.
Are OTG shooting glasses ballistic rated?
The four here state ANSI Z87.1+ high impact (the OverSpecs+ states Z87.1 without the plus). None states a MIL-PRF pass. For the ballistic tier with a prescription, use an insert-ready frame.
Why do over-the-glasses shields fog so badly?
Warm air is trapped between your glasses and the shield, and there are three lens surfaces to fog. A named anti-fog coating on the shield — H2MAX, H2X, Platinum — is the fix.
