The lens and frame passed ANSI/ISEA Z87.1's high-impact tests: a 500 g pointed weight dropped from about four feet and a quarter-inch steel ball at about 150 ft/s. Plain "Z87" means basic impact only. The full marking table is on what Z87+ means.

At the floor, yes — both are rated under Z87.1 and a Z87+ shop pair passes the same tests as a Z87+ shooting pair. Shooting glasses add a MIL-PRF ballistic tier, wrap coverage, target tints and temples for muffs. See shooting glasses vs safety glasses.

The U.S. military's combat eye protection specification. Its signature test fires a small fragment simulator at several times the energy of the ANSI steel ball; Gatorz puts it at about seven times. A pair whose maker states a MIL-PRF-32432 pass is the ballistic tier. See MIL-PRF-32432 explained.

Eyewear on the U.S. Army's Authorized Protective Eyewear List: the Army tested that configuration to MIL-PRF-32432 itself and marked it with the APEL logo. It is the only rating on a product page the maker did not write. See the APEL guide.

Only if the product page names an impact standard. Oakley, Wiley X and others sell rated sunglasses and unrated ones under the same brand; a dark wraparound with no standard on the page is not rated. The five-step check is on how to tell if glasses are ballistic rated.

Makers do not publish an expiry date, and neither do we. Replace a lens that has taken an impact, is scratched enough to hinder sight, or whose coating has worn off; check the frame for cracks at the hinges. A rating is for a lens in good condition.

Clear indoors and at dusk, smoke in bright sun, yellow or amber in flat light, vermillion or rose for orange clays. Most shooters need clear plus one contrast tint. See the lens color guide.

Yellow blocks blue light, which scatters and flattens contrast in overcast or dim light, so edges sharpen and the scene reads brighter. See yellow vs clear.

Usually not on the line: a polarizer can dim a red-dot sight and blank an LCD range display, and it does nothing for an orange clay. It helps with iron sights in heavy glare, such as waterfowl over water. See should shooting glasses be polarized.

Clear first; vermillion is the one tint with a stated indoor purpose (Howard Leight names it for fluorescent and halogen ranges); yellow on a dim bay. Nothing darker. See best lens color for an indoor range.

Three ways: an Rx insert behind a rated lens (ESS, Wiley X and Revision document theirs), a prescription ground into a Z87.1 safety lens, or a rated over-the-glasses shield. Only the insert keeps a MIL-PRF or APEL rating. See the prescription guide.

Ordinary street glasses are not impact-rated and can shatter toward the eye. Wear a rated OTG shield over them, or use an insert or a Z87-2 safety frame. See over-the-glasses shooting glasses.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says ballistic eyewear is the only protective eyewear designed for air guns. A strapped, sealed goggle with a stated MIL-PRF-32432 rating is the closest a parent can buy to that guidance. See BB gun and air gun eye injuries.

They can, but an adult frame usually gaps at the cheek and slides on a small nose, removing the coverage the rating assumes. Youth-cut frames or a strapped goggle fit properly. See best youth shooting glasses.
