Kids need safety glasses in more places than the range: a table saw's dust, a weed trimmer, a chemistry set, a foam dart to the eye. Same rule as adults — the rating on the page, the fit on the face.

Fit on a child
The frame has to be cut small. Pyramex says the Mini Ztek is "better suited for slimmer facial sizes"; Radians says the DU-Y1 is "specifically designed to fit smaller heads and faces"; Walker's says the Clearview Youth is "engineered specifically for smaller heads". An adult frame on a child leaves a gap at the cheek and slides down the nose, and a child will not push it back up. Rubber temple tips (Mini Ztek, DU-Y1) and a strap (I-Force, DPG82) are the two things that keep a pair on a head that never stops moving. The mirror checks are on best youth shooting glasses.
Nerf and foam darts
A foam dart is soft and a Nerf blaster is a toy; an eye is still an eye, and the injury reports are real enough that the question "kids safety glasses for Nerf" is one parents actually search. The hazard is the same shape as an airsoft pellet — something light, moving fast, arriving from an angle you did not see — and the answer is the same: a sealed goggle with a strap that cannot be knocked off in a game. The I-Force is rated for airsoft (ASTM F2879-22 with the strap) and is more than a Nerf war needs; that is the point.
What the ratings cover
The Z87.1 impact tests — a steel ball at about 150 ft/s, a pointed weight from four feet — cover a chip from a chisel and a thrown pebble from a mower. They do not cover a BB from a spring rifle the way the MIL-PRF fragment test does, which is why the I-Force is the air-gun pick and the AAO's guidance is quoted on BB gun and air gun eye injuries.
