The best safety glasses for woodworking: six pairs matched to dust, chips and a long day at the bench

Dust: seal it
Fine dust drifts around a lens and into the eye no matter how the frame wraps. Only a seal stops it, and a seal without vents fogs in minutes. DEWALT's DPG82 is the archetype: "soft, dual-injected rubber seal conforms to the face", "built-in ventilation channels", a ToughCoat hard coat and an anti-fog coat, Z87.1+. The Pyramex V2G does the same with foam and a headband, and converts back to glasses with temples for the range — a woodworker who also shoots gets two tools in one box. Chips: the Z87.1+ ball test
A splinter thrown by a table saw or a chip off a planer is exactly the object the ANSI Z87.1 high-velocity test simulates — a small, hard thing at speed. Any pair here with the plus passed that test; the Intruder states "ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 + High Impact", the SecureFit "ANSI Z87.1+ High Impact" per the listing, the DPG82 "ANSI Z87.1+". The EyeArmor+ states Z87.1-2020 without the plus, which is why it ranks last for a saw and fine for a finishing room. What the plus means is on Z87 vs Z87+.
All day: weight and fog
The pair you keep on is the one that protects you, and the reasons people take shop glasses off are pressure behind the ears and fog. 3M's SecureFit 400 addresses the first with "Pressure Diffusion Temple Technology" — temples that flex to head size and spread the load — at under an ounce, and the second with an anti-fog lens. The Intruder is nearly as light and cheap enough to be everywhere; the EyeArmor+ adjusts temple length and nose pad for a shared shop. Fog fixes are ranked on how to stop shooting glasses fogging.

Shop glasses: three checks
- The plus. "Z87.1+" or "high impact" for any machine that throws chips.
- A named coating. ToughCoat, H2MAX, anti-fog by name — you will be wiping dust off these daily.

How Lens & Lead rates eyewear

Plenty of sites say they shot every pair on the list. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the certification the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("meets", "certified", "tested to", "APEL"), check the lens system and the tints in the box, note whether the temples are described for ear muffs and whether an Rx route exists, and score every pick on a public rubric that weights protection first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite the retailer and say so. The standards themselves are explained on ANSI Z87.1 vs MIL-PRF-32432.

What safety glasses are best for woodworking?

Do I need goggles or glasses for a table saw?
Glasses with the Z87.1+ mark cover thrown chips. Goggles are for airborne dust — sanding, routing, turning — where a seal is the only thing that keeps it out.
Can I wear my shooting glasses in the shop?
Yes; a rated shooting pair is a rated pair. The Pyramex V2G is built for both, with temples for the bench and a seal and strap for dust.
