Top segment or bottom segment
A pistol's front sight is at arm's length and above your line of sight when the gun is up; a loading manual is at reading distance and below it. A conventional bifocal puts the segment at the bottom, which is right for the bench and useless for the sight — you would have to tip your head back and look down your nose at the gun. A top-focal puts the segment where the gun is. SSP describes its Top Focal as a "top bifocal" for exactly this; Pyramex's readers are bottom segments and its V2G Reader page notes the insert is "out of user's direct line of vision", which is the bench design stated plainly.

Choosing the power
A reader power is set for a distance. Drugstore readers assume a book at 14–16 in; a pistol front sight is farther — roughly 24–30 in with the arms extended — and needs a weaker segment than you read with. Shooters commonly find that a power one or two steps below their reading power brings the front sight sharp without blurring the target beyond use, which is why SSP sells the Top Focal in quarter steps. For a bench, use your reading power. An optometrist can measure both; we do not prescribe and neither should a product page.
The rating on a reader
Pyramex states "ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 + High Impact" on all three of its readers. SSP writes "ANSI Z87.1 rated ballistic lenses" on the Top Focal page and states Z87.1-2015 high impact for its whole sporting collection; the page itself does not print the plus, and we note it. None of the four states a MIL-PRF pass; a reader segment molded into a lens is a Z87.1 product, and for the ballistic tier with a prescription you want an insert — see best shooting glasses with Rx inserts. The V2G Reader page also does not carry the plain V2G's MIL-PRF-32432 wording, so we do not credit it there.

- Sight or bench? Top segment for the sight; bottom for the bench.
- What power? Weaker than your reading power for the sight; your reading power for the bench. Measure the distance and ask an optometrist.
- Indoors? Then a named anti-fog coating matters — H2X or NVR Fog here.

Plenty of sites say they shot every pair on the list. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the certification the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("meets", "certified", "tested to", "APEL"), check the lens system and the tints in the box, note whether the temples are described for ear muffs and whether an Rx route exists, and score every pick on a public rubric that weights protection first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite the retailer and say so. The standards themselves are explained on ANSI Z87.1 vs MIL-PRF-32432.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

What are top-focal shooting glasses?
Readers with the magnified segment at the top of the lens, where a pistol's front sight sits when the gun is up. SSP sells them in +1.00 to +3.00.
What power reader for a pistol front sight?
Usually weaker than your reading power, because the sight is farther than a book. Measure your sight distance with the gun up and ask an optometrist; SSP sells quarter-step powers for fine-tuning.
Are bifocal safety glasses ANSI rated?
The Pyramex readers here state Z87.1-2020+ high impact; SSP states Z87.1 for the Top Focal and Z87.1-2015 high impact for its collection. None states a MIL-PRF pass.
