Why a kit
You do not shoot in one light. An indoor bay wants clear; a bright field wants smoke; an overcast clay course wants amber, yellow or vermillion. A kit puts those in one case behind one rated frame, so the fit you have dialed in — nose piece, temple length, the way it sits under your muffs — stays the same when the light changes. Two single-lens pairs cost more and fit differently.

How the lens swaps
ESS uses a "patented DedBolt Lens Lock" on the Crossbow and a frameless lens-to-temple design on the ICE; Walker's describes a "clip & tension mounted design"; Wiley X calls the Saber a changeable-lens system with a foam insert on the lens itself. What you want is a swap you can do with cold fingers at a bench without a tool, and a lock that holds under recoil. None of these makers publishes a retention test, so the lock system is a design note, not a rating.
Does the rating survive the swap?
Only with the maker's own lenses. A rating is for the frame and lens as tested; ESS, Wiley X and Revision sell replacement lenses for these frames, and the claim on the page covers those. A third-party lens in a rated frame is an untested assembly, whatever the seller says. The rule and the test are on how to tell if glasses are ballistic rated.

How Lens & Lead rates eyewear
Pairs we claim to have worn or tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they shot every pair on the list. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the certification the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("meets", "certified", "tested to", "APEL"), check the lens system and the tints in the box, note whether the temples are described for ear muffs and whether an Rx route exists, and score every pick on a public rubric that weights protection first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite the retailer and say so. The standards themselves are explained on ANSI Z87.1 vs MIL-PRF-32432.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Frequently asked
Are interchangeable lenses as safe as fixed lenses?
With the maker's own lenses, the rating on the page applies. The lock system is a design feature, not a tested spec, so choose a maker that states the rating for the kit.
Which lens colors should a kit include?
Clear for indoors and dusk, smoke for bright sun, and one contrast tint — amber, yellow or vermillion — for flat light and orange clays.
Can I buy replacement lenses for these kits?
ESS, Wiley X and Revision sell replacement lenses for the frames on this list; Howard Leight and Walker's sell the kit as a unit. Check the maker's page for your frame.
