A reader is not a prescription

A reader adds magnifying power. It does not correct astigmatism, it does not correct a difference between your two eyes, and it does nothing for distance vision. If close work is blurry and everything else is sharp, a reader is exactly right and costs a tenth of the alternative. If your two eyes need different corrections, or you have a cylinder correction, no reader will fix it and you need one of the routes on the prescription safety glasses page. The segment is the decision

Three geometries, three jobs, and getting this wrong is what makes people give up on safety readers.

A bottom segment — the classic bifocal line — is for work on a bench in front of you: a caliper, a torque wrench, a wiring diagram, a loading manual. Your distance view stays clear and you drop your eyes to magnify. The Intruder Reader and the V2G Reader both do this, in +1.5, +2.0 and +2.5, and Pyramex says the V2G insert sits out of your direct line of vision.

A full reader lens magnifies the whole lens. That is right when everything you look at for the next two hours is at arm's length — assembly, soldering, fine finishing — and wrong when you need to walk around. The Emerge takes a full +1.5 or +2.0 lens for exactly that.

A top segment is the unusual one, and for some trades it is the answer nobody tells them about. If what you need to read is above your eye line — a junction box, a breaker panel, a ceiling grid, a pipe run, or a pistol front sight — a bottom segment forces you to tip your head back until your neck complains. Choosing the diopter

If you already own drugstore readers, buy the same power — the diopter is the diopter. If you do not, the usual rule of thumb runs by decade: about +1.25 to +1.50 in your forties, +1.75 to +2.00 in your fifties, +2.25 and up after that. That is a starting point and not an eye exam; a working distance longer than a book — a lathe carriage, a panel at arm's length — usually wants half a step less power than you would use to read. The cheapest way to be sure is to borrow a set of drugstore readers, find the power that puts your actual work in focus at your actual distance, then buy that power in a rated frame.

Does the magnifier keep the Z87 rating?

It has to be certified as an assembly, the same as any other safety lens, and marked accordingly. All five picks here state ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 on the maker's page — four of them the current 2020 edition with the high-impact plus, and SSP's kit page stating Z87.1-rated lenses with its collection page adding the Z87.1-2015 high-impact wording. What does not carry a rating is a stick-on magnifying lens applied to a pair of safety glasses after the fact. If you buy one

Two practical warnings

Fog. A fogged reader segment is worse than no segment, because the magnified area is exactly where you are looking. Only two picks here name an anti-fog: the V2G Reader (H2X) and the Top Focal ("NVR Fog"). If you work hot or humid, that narrows the list.

Tint. Three of these are clear only. If your close work happens outdoors — surveying, roofing, reading a meter in the sun — the Top Focal kit is the only pick here that includes tinted lenses with the magnified segment in them.
