The best safety glasses for yard work: five rated picks for sun, gravel and trimmer line

Yard work is the one job where a safety lens has to double as a sunglass. Get the tint wrong and the glasses end up on the porch rail, which is the only way they fail to protect anything.

What actually hits you in a yard

Three hazards, and they arrive from three different directions, which is why one pair rarely covers an entire Saturday.

A string trimmer throws at eye height. This is the serious one. A trimmer head spinning at the bottom of a wall or a fence line picks up gravel, bark chips, wire, glass and bits of the trimmer line itself, and because the head is held low and out in front, debris leaves on a rising path. It arrives fast and from directly ahead — which is precisely the hazard the ANSI Z87.1 high-velocity test models, and the reason we treat the "+" mark as the floor for this job rather than a nice extra.

A mower throws from below and behind. Deck discharge sprays sideways and down, and a lot of what reaches your face is bouncing off the ground or the mower itself. That means it comes up from underneath the bottom rim of a pair of glasses. A frame that sits close to the face, with coverage low on the cheek, matters more than lens width here.

Brush and branches arrive at walking speed. Hedge trimming, clearing scrub, cutting a fallen limb: now the hazard is a whippy branch pushed aside and released, or a twig entering from the side as you turn your head. Slow, but entirely capable of a corneal abrasion, and the reason a sealed or deeply wrapped frame makes sense once you move from lawn to brush.

Figures as published by the maker (or, where labeled, the retailer); each value links to its source. A dash means the figure isn't in our cited sources.

Quoted from the linked source for each cell. A dash means the figure is not published in the documents we cite. The Ever-Lite is the only pick here whose light-transmission range is published — 85% to 24% — because photochromic lenses are the one category where makers print the number.

The tint decision, which is the whole decision

Everywhere else on this site, tint is an optimization. In a yard it decides whether the glasses stay on your face, and a pair in your shirt pocket has a protection factor of zero. Three honest options:

Polarized, if your work is in open sun. Mowing an open lawn at midday is a glare problem: light bouncing off grass, concrete and parked cars. A polarized lens cuts reflected glare specifically rather than just dimming everything, which is why the Goliath and the WX Peak are the top two here. Note the one real cost — polarization interferes with some LCD screens, so a mower or tractor display can go dark at certain head angles. Why that happens, and how to check a lens is genuinely polarized, is on how to tell if lenses are polarized.

Photochromic, if your yard has shade. If you move from a sunny front lawn to a shaded side yard to a dim garage twenty times, a fixed dark lens is wrong most of the time. The Ever-Lite's photochromic lens handles it — with the published caveat that it needs direct ultraviolet to darken, so behind a windscreen or under a dense canopy it stays light. The full photochromic field is on best photochromic safety glasses.

Clear, if you work in the evening. The single most common mistake we see in this category is buying a dark lens for a job that happens at 7pm. A clear Intruder costs almost nothing and is the correct answer for dusk, overcast days and anything under a tree line. Keeping a cheap clear pair alongside a tinted pair is a better plan than compromising on one lens, and it is cheaper than most single frames.

When to upgrade to a sealed goggle

Three triggers. You are running a chainsaw or a brush cutter, where chips arrive continuously and from unpredictable angles. You are working in dust — a dry lawn, a leaf blower, a dirt bank — where a goggle marked for dust is doing a job glasses cannot. Or you wear prescription glasses and want coverage over them without buying a second prescription.

The DPG82 is the pick here because DEWALT publishes the parts that matter: a dual-injected rubber seal that conforms to the face, ventilation channels so it is survivable in heat, ToughCoat and an anti-fog lens, and 99.9% UVA/UVB protection. The cost is heat and a strap. For chainsaw work specifically, note that this site covers eyewear only — hearing protection and cut-resistant clothing are separate decisions we do not rate, and a combined helmet system may be the better buy.

UV is a real part of the job

An afternoon mowing in July is a genuine ultraviolet exposure, and it is worth knowing what your lens actually claims. On this list Wiley X states 100% UVA/UVB, DEWALT states 99.9% UVA/UVB, the retailer lists 99% UVA/B/C for the Ever-Lite — and Pyramex's Intruder page states UV protection without a percentage, which is why our table leaves that cell short rather than inventing a figure.

The useful point: a clear polycarbonate safety lens already blocks most UV, so a clear pair is not a UV compromise. Dark does not mean more protective and light does not mean less — what to look for, and the markings that encode it, is on do safety glasses block UV.

What the spec page supports

  • Three standards on one page — Z87.1-2020 with the plus, CSA and EN 166
  • A polarized lens at a buy-by-the-box price, so losing a pair off a truck bed is not an event
  • Co-injected rubber temples hold on a sweating head
  • Same frame family is sold with H2X anti-fog if you would rather have fog control than glare control

Where it falls short

  • No anti-fog named for the polarized SKU
  • No MIL-PRF wording; no published weight or UV figure
  • Full-frame wrap, one size — no small or large option

Skip this if…

…your problem is fog rather than glare — the H2X version of this same frame is the smarter buy, and it costs about the same.

What the spec page supports

  • The maker publishes both ends of the transition — 85% clear, 24% dark — instead of saying "adjusts to the light"
  • 22 grams: the lightest pair in this batch, and the one you forget you are wearing
  • Z87.1-2020 with the high-impact plus, plus the Canadian standard
  • Slim co-injected temples sit under a muff cup without levering the seal

Where it falls short

  • No named anti-fog coating on the photochromic SKU, though Pyramex sells H2X on its siblings
  • No MIL-PRF wording anywhere on the page — this is a Z87+ pair, not a ballistic one
  • Photochromic lenses barely darken behind a windshield, and stock on this SKU moves

Skip this if…

…you shoot behind glass or in a covered indoor bay — a photochromic lens needs direct UV to darken, and indoors it simply stays clear, which is fine but makes the feature pointless.

The rating floor for a trimmer

We would not use anything below a stated ANSI Z87.1 high-impact "+" for string-trimmer work. The high-velocity test — a quarter-inch steel ball at 150 ft/s — is a reasonable model of a gravel chip leaving a trimmer head, and the basic Z87.1 impact test is not. Four of these five state the plus; what separates the two tests is on Z87 vs Z87+.

You do not need a military ballistic rating to mow a lawn. If you already own a MIL-PRF-32432 frame from the range, it is more than adequate — the standards are compared on ANSI Z87.1 vs MIL-PRF-32432.

Comfort is a safety spec here

Nothing on this page matters if the pair is uncomfortable, because yard work is hot, sweaty and long. Look for rubber or co-injected temples and a rubber nose piece — both Pyramex picks state them — and consider weight: the Ever-Lite is published at 22 grams. If you want the lightest rated frames on the site, they are ranked on best lightweight shooting glasses, and the pairs built for all-day wear are on safety glasses for everyday use.

How Lens & Lead rates eyewear

How these picks were chosen

Every pair here is picked from the certification its maker publishes and repeats in its own wording ("meets", "certified", "tested to", "APEL"), the lens system and the tints in the box, whether the temples are described for ear muffs, and whether an Rx route exists — then scored on a public rubric that weights protection first. Every figure links to the page it came from, so you can confirm the protection before you buy. The standards themselves are explained on ANSI Z87.1 vs MIL-PRF-32432.

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, and the rating, the lens system and the fit are what move a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

What safety glasses should I wear to use a string trimmer?

A frame whose maker states ANSI Z87.1 with the high-impact "+", worn close to the face. A trimmer picks up gravel and wire and throws it at eye height, which is the hazard the high-velocity test models. Ordinary sunglasses are not tested as an assembled frame and lens and are not a substitute.

Are polarized safety glasses good for mowing?

Yes — mowing in open sun is mostly a glare problem, and polarization cuts reflected glare rather than just dimming the scene. The one catch is that polarized lenses can black out LCD displays at certain angles, so a mower or tractor screen may be harder to read.

Do I need goggles for yard work or are glasses enough?

Rated glasses are enough for mowing and trimming. Move to a sealed goggle for chainsaw and brush work, for dusty conditions, or if you want coverage over prescription frames.

Can I wear one pair for both sunny and shaded yard work?

A photochromic lens is the one-pair answer — Pyramex publishes the Ever-Lite range as 85% to 24% light transmission — but it needs direct UV to darken, so it stays light under a dense canopy or behind glass. Otherwise, a cheap clear pair plus a tinted pair beats one compromise lens.
