What a hunt asks that a range does not

Wind, which dries the eye and carries grit. Brush, which rakes glasses off a face. Dawn light, which is blue and flat, followed by noon glare on snow or stubble. A long, cold sit in which a fogged lens is the difference between a shot and a story. And muffs or plugs in a blind. The rating is the same Z87+ floor and MIL-PRF upgrade as anywhere else — a hunt's hazards are a stray pellet, a branch and a ricochet — but the frame has to do more.

Seal and retention

Wiley X answers both on the Gravity: a "removable irritant-blocking gasket" that closes the gap between lens and face, and a "T-docking strap" that turns a sunglass into something a briar cannot take off. The V2G does the same with a flame-resistant foam seal and a headband in the box. The Saber Advanced's foam brow insert handles the top; the Tanker's rubber temples and EVA nose piece handle grip. A gasket is warm on a September dove field and exactly right in a November wind.

Dawn amber, noon smoke

The first legal hour is flat and blue; an amber lens cuts the blue and lifts a deer's outline from gray brush. By mid-morning on an open field the same lens is too bright and smoke takes over. That is the case for a changeable-lens frame (Saber Advanced), a kit (V2G ships amber and gray among its options), or two cheap pairs (a Tanker in amber and one in smoke). The Gravity ships smoke and is honestly a mid-morning-onward sunglass. Muffs in the blind

Electronic muffs in a blind are the norm for a waterfowler and common for anyone shooting from a box. The Defiant's temples are "designed to eliminate pressure points while wearing over-the-ear hearing protection"; the Vapor's are "thin design".
