Why tint is the gift
A trap, skeet or sporting clays target is a small orange disc moving fast against whatever is behind it — an overcast sky, a treeline, bright blue. The lens that makes the disc pop is the one worth giving, and it is not the one that looks coolest. Vermillion (a pink-red) and rose lift orange against green and gray; amber and yellow lift contrast in flat light; smoke does nothing for the bird and darkens the background. The matrix is on best lens color for sporting clays.
Which tint for which field
- Overcast, trees behind the trap: vermillion or rose.
- Bright, open sky: amber, or a light bronze; smoke only if glare is the problem.
- Dusk or evening leagues under lights: yellow or clear.
- Unknown: a kit — the Genesis (clear, amber, vermillion) or Walker's (clear, smoke, amber, yellow).
The frame: light, thin, open
Clay shooters mount the gun with their cheek and look through the top of the lens. That favors a frameless or half-frame design with nothing across the top edge, thin temples that clear muffs, and light weight for a hundred-target afternoon. The Clay Pro is that shape: frameless, thin metal temples, an adjustable nose. The Methow is the competition version. The Genesis and Walker's wraps are fuller frames that trade a little sightline for a brow guard and a lower price.

Plenty of sites say they shot every pair on the list. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the certification the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("meets", "certified", "tested to", "APEL"), check the lens system and the tints in the box, note whether the temples are described for ear muffs and whether an Rx route exists, and score every pick on a public rubric that weights protection first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite the retailer and say so. The standards themselves are explained on ANSI Z87.1 vs MIL-PRF-32432.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

What color shooting glasses do clay shooters use?
Vermillion and rose for orange targets against trees and gray sky; amber and yellow for flat light; clear for evening. Rarely smoke.
Is a lens kit a good gift for a trap shooter?
Yes, if it includes a vermillion, rose or amber lens. The Genesis kit ships vermillion; the Walker's kit ships amber and yellow.
Do clay shooters need ballistic-rated glasses?
Z87.1+ is the sensible floor for clay hazards. Ballistic (MIL-PRF) ratings matter more for steel and air guns; on a clay field the tint matters more than the tier.
